Tagus Valles, Mars

Ozzy glanced over his shoulder, driving the Odyssey at a breakneck speed. “Contact one of your guys or someone, and tell them to get these MMP’s off our ass.”

“Take a left,” screamed Lyra.

Ozzy rolled his eyes and yanked the wheel, turning it down another road, and pressed on the pedal. “Notify your damn syndicate.”

Ozzy veered his car to the right, zipping down a side street and passing a hovervehicle in the process. The vehicle honked and swerved out of the way.

“I didn’t tell you to take a right,” growled Lyra.

The MMP’s sirens echoed off the buildings and skyscrapers Ozzy flew by.

“I’m trying to lose them and—”

A loud crunch of metal against metal and the Odyssey vibrated and dipped closer to the ground. Ozzy lurched forward in his seat, tagging his head on the top of the steering wheel.

He glanced at his side mirror. A police hovercar impacted the Odyssey and swerved into Ozzy’s lane, connecting well.

Ozzy cranked the wheel, turning down yet another street. He glanced in his rear cam holodisplay on his driver’s console.

Smoke was swirling in the air behind him, and the MMP vehicle that rammed him had T-boned into another car, the hood bent upward and smashed.

More MMP were in pursuit, tearing down the road and speeding as fast as Ozzy.

“Good,” yelled Lyra.

“Good? What’s good?” Nothing seemed good about any of this.

Ozzy zipped down another side street, avoiding several civilian cars by zigzagging around them.

“We have some friends about to join us. We’re setting something up now and congregating in one place.”

“What friends?”

“You asked for my syndicate, so this is my gift to you.” She pointed to the right. “Down that street.”

Ozzy did as directed.

“Now that street.”

It was like a maze, and Ozzy was driving like a bat out of hell down street after street.

“Take a left,” ordered Lyra.

Ozzy turned the wheel. “Whoa!”

He took the turn too wide and slammed into an unoccupied hoverbike, the bike flipped into the air, twirling over the Odyssey. The bike came down hard on the pavement and bounced up and down in a gnarled, broken mess.

He swerved back onto the road; his eyes wide. “Shit.” He pressed on the brakes, leaning back against his seat. The Odyssey came to a screeching halt, sliding then stopping mere centimeters from rear-ending a vehicle.

He let out an exhale and wiped the sweat from his eyes. He glanced at his rear holovids. The MMP were approaching, but he had nowhere to go. A row of hovercars was parked in front of him.

He looked at his wrist device, noting the time, his heart beating quickly and his eyes darting toward the incoming MMP to the many hovering vehicles in front of him. “It’s not rush hour.” He pressed on the horn. “Why in Mars’s butthole are they stopped?”

He punched his steering wheel and smacked the horn again. The cars in front of him didn’t budge.

He went to stand. “We gotta go, Lyra.”

She grabbed his arm. “Not yet.”

“Suit yourself, but I’m jetting out of here.”
